from the earlier-then-expected dept.
Tonight Microsoft has released the security update MS06-001 - Vulnerability in Graphics Rendering Engine Could Allow Remote Code Execution (912919) earlier then planned. This update is marked as critical.
Please make sure that this update is installed as soon as possible and visit Microsoft Update with Internet Explorer.

Initially Microsoft had planned to release this update together with others on the scheduled regular Security Update Day, which will be on the next Tuesday. Additional security updates will be relaeased then, including 2 critical updates, see Microsoft Security Bulletin Advance Notification for more informations.

This Security Update should fix the problem we described in the article WMF Exloit in the Wild.

Incidentially, an AMD discussion forum was affected by the WMF flaw. AMD stopped the forums temporarily and had the problem fixed quickly.

This shows that even unsuspecting, respectable web sites can be affected if the services provider that runs the site is slow in updating.

The conclusion: patch known vulnerabilities in the operating system and applications as early as possible, even if you think the security hole does not directly apply to you.
