  Mailserver policy

Today, we changed the policy of our mailserver to reject mails from non-resolveable senders. This will stop a lot of spam and reduce the load of our mailserver - on the other hand, it may be that some really broken setups are no longer able to send us mail. Please contact us in case of problems.

The submission port (587) is still open and could be used to send mails out. A second alternative is our webmail

Yesterday, we were also able to improve performance of the bayesian database. A missing index was the problem. After adding this index to the MySQL table, the periodically expiration is 250 times faster then before :-)

Our statistic shows the problems - during the expiry run, all other mailprocessing was locked:

    Hi Beat, could you explain in less technical terms which senders will be rejected? It's not really clear to me what it means that a sender is "non-resolvable". - Mathias

      Each computer in the internet has an IP number. This number looks like 129.132.189.7. Numbers are not easy to remember and most computers have a name like malfoy.ethz.ch.

      To find the number from the name, a service called DNS (Domain Name Server) is used. Each time you contact a computer by it's name, your computer asks the DNS for the IP number of the target computer.

      So there is a record in the DNS, which gives you the IP number 129.132.189.7 when you ask for malfoy.ethz.ch. Reverse entrys are the other way round. You ask for the name of the IP 129.132.189.7 and you get the name malfoy.ethz.ch.

      Because forward and reverse entrys are handled differtent, the check forward and reverse is a little security check, which is done by several services.
